Based in Amsterdam, PISSWIFE’s activism wishes to speak to feminists all over the world, however still remaining in touch with our roots in the Netherlands. This is why every month, we’ll present to you an agenda of interesting readings, protests, lectures or exhibitions in this country that PISSWIFE will attend or that could be of interest to our readers. This month, these are our suggestions:
3rd of May – Scopophilia Arts Festival
Scopophilia Arts Festival is a one day festival in Sexyland, in the North of Amsterdam. The festival is run completely by students and they incorporate a wide variety of visual and performing arts in their events. “Our aim is to give young and upcoming artists a platform to present their work. We believe that art is an essential element of human life an culture and should not be confined to the often sterile spaces of galleries and museums.” More information about the festival can be found on the Facebook event.
8th of May – International event: Involving men in harassment prevention
The international partners of Emancipator NL are coming to the Netherlands to discuss ways to facilitate men’s involvement in harassment prevention. “Be there to gain contacts, inspiration and expertise on international work with men to prevent violence against women.” Find more information on the event and if you want to help or contribute something to the event, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org
9th of May – Beyond the Binary – visibility
Beyond the Binary is a meet-up series by Queer Rotterdam for people who are beyond the binary of gender: “whether you’re trans, non-binary, genderqueer, gender-fluid, agender, questioning, or any other non-cis gender identity. We ask that you judge for yourself whether this event is for you, but please keep in mind that it is very important that in this space, queering is a verb and we will do it.” This third meet-up event revolves around the theme: Visibility. 11th of May – Zine Happening V
PISSWIFE is going abroad again! In the weekend of May 11th and 12th, we will be selling zines and showcasing our artworks in the lovely city of Gent! Zine Happening V is organized by Les VoiZines and will include not only zine-makers but also tattoo artists and an embroidery workshop. We are so excited to take the Flixbus and see you all there!
12th of May – Hiphop Chronicles by Isabel Sijbrandij
PISSWIFE’s very own Isabel Sijbrandij has her first solo exhibition this month! She teamed up with RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. to put on an amazing expo of her paintings. “Isabel Sijbrandij is an aspiring painter who draws her inspiration from music. Grown up with a variety of hiphop and urban influences she finds the new generations of hiphop artists a huge inspiration for her paintings.” You definitely don’t want to miss this.
15th of May – Verkiezingsdebat Europa – Met vrouwelijke kandidaten
The amazing initiative Stem op een Vrouw (Vote for a Woman) is hosting this debate with female candidates for the upcoming European elections. This event features spoken word artists Rachel Rumai and Marrilou Louwaard, who are insanely talented. You can get your tickets here.
18th of May – La Fête de la Femme
Do you love women, food and parties? This new event is something for you. La Fête de la Femme was initiated by Anna Belderink and Emma de Smit, who wanted to create a night in which you get food, talks, goodies and you can have a little dance afterwards, made especially for the femme. 22nd of May – Decolonization and the Political Use of History
This event will take place in the Oude Lutherse Kerk. “The Annual NIAS Lecture 2019 highlights the relevance of history in today’s world. Building upon the comparative research project of the NIAS Theme Group ‘Comparing the Wars of Decolonization’, this year’s public lecture deals with Japanese and Dutch imperial justifications of occupying the Indonesian Archipelago.” To sign up for this lecture, click here.
28th of May – (DUTCH) De Schoonheidssalon #5: Sekse & the City
Our friends over at de Bovengrondse are hosting another one of their amazing events. It’s like a real life talk show with amazing people and feminist discussions. Obviously: You should be there.
