Based in Amsterdam, PISSWIFE’s activism wishes to speak to feminists all over the world, however still remaining in touch with our roots in the Netherlands. This is why every month, we’ll present to you an agenda of interesting readings, protests, lectures or exhibitions in this country that PISSWIFE will attend or that could be of interest to our readers. This month, these are our suggestions:
From 1st of June – Louise Bourgeouis in the Rijksmuseum
The French-American artist Louise Bourgeouis is known for her famous gigantic spiders. With their huge eyes and made of aluminium, she created artwork you’ve never seen before. This spring the Rijksmuseum presents Louise Bourgeois in the Rijksmuseum Gardens, a free outdoor exhibition of twelve sculptures! More information can be found on the Rijksmuseum Website.
1st until 5th of June – Tyler Mitchell – “I Can Make You Feel Good” at foam
Tyler Mitchell’s work visualises a black utopia. Making use of candy colour palettes and natural light, Mitchell captures young black people in gardens, parks or in front of idyllic studio backdrops where they appear as free, expressive, effortless, sensitive and proud. The utopia that Mitchell creates, makes one realise how highly it contrasts with the way reality is represented. Check this event out at the Foam website!
1st of June – Utrecht Migrant Sexworkers Movienight
One evening before the international day of sexworkers, a movie night about sexwork takes place in the filmcafé. You can listen to a talk about sex work in the Netherlands, and watch two very different great movies about sex work, at first „Crossings: Stories of Migrant Sex Workers“ and afterwards „Touch me not“. 1st of June – De Kloffie Markt
Discover and shop slow fashion. Once a month this market takes place and turns De Hallen Amsterdam in a fashion hub. Meet here like-minded people and get inspired by the aspects of slow fashion. Here you can find second-hand designer clothing, vintage treasures and rare collector’s items. More information on the Facebook event.
2nd of June – Volkshotel Hot Tubs
Is there a better way to spend your Sunday than in a hot tub overlooking Amsterdam? From 12:00-18:00 Badplaats at Volkshotel is open to for everyone. So grab your towel, slap on that swimsuit and dive in one of the rooftop hot tubs or get sweaty in the little sauna. You only have to bring your swimwear and towels, and the entrance is free. 4th, 11th and 18th of June – Film with a View at Pllek: Sun Screenings
Every Tuesday evening from June until September, pllek will host an open air movie. Laid back near the bonfire, you can enjoy a selected variation of movies while the sun sets, and cuddle into your blanket, while having a gorgeous view. Check out the movie program in the Facebook event!
10th of June – Unicef Movienight: The Man Who Mends Women: The Wrath of Hippocrates
Unicef will show this Belgian movie-documentary telling the path and activist life of Nobel Price Winner, Doctor Denis Mukwege. Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist and Pentecostal pastor, who has been treating thousands of women, girls and children who were victims of rape in his hospital Panzi in the Republic Democratic of Congo. 13th of June – Westergas Terrass Latin Night
At this event, you can dance the night away and try out some new dance moves! Free workshops for beginners in different dance styles (Salsa, Bachata, or Zouk) will be offered, so everyone can join. After dancing outside, the party will move to the inside until the early hours, so you can practice your newly learned dance moves. More information can be found here.
15th until 16th of June – Kapsalon Klan Zine Fair
Guests from all over Europe will bring their comics, prints and t-shirts to OT301 and just wait for you to come and see all these incredible things! There will also be exhibitions, drinks, food and music. For more information, check out the Facebook event.
20th of June – SLAA – Van Vulva Tot Vagina
What is the role of female sexuality in art, media, and literature? Where do we find the vulva in art history? At this event at SEXYLAND you can find the answers. With an open discussion together with experts from media, art, culture and literature, these questions will be investigated. Tickets can be bought here.
23rd of June – Blogger Closet Sale Student Hotel
The Student Hotel in the city center of Amsterdam launches another blogger closet sale, where you can find great clothes and outfits by Dutch bloggers for great prices! More information about the event can be found here.
26th of June – Paper Fetish: No Guys Allowed Workshop
No Guys Allowed is a creative women’s group designed to give women a space to express themselves in a semi-private, welcoming, and empowering setting. Here you can enjoy performance/public speaking, photography, self-publishing, and more. A guest speaker lady will be invited, who will share her works, ideas, and stories.
